Dr Raymond J. Clough died unexpectedly on June 30th, surrounded by his beloved wife and children. He was 82.
Ray was born in Hartford, CT and was a star athlete at Hartford Public High School. He went to college at Holy Cross, and on one fateful car ride back to CT, he met the love of his life, Ruth (Sipples) Clough. Ray and Ruth were married in 1962 in Washington DC. Ray earned a Masters from Catholic University and a Ph.D. from SUNY Buffalo. Ray and Ruth settled down in Buffalo, their favorite city.
Ray found his professional calling in teaching. He taught at Canisius College for 38 years. Ray inspired countless students and instilled a love of French literature, culture and technology. Ray also had a passion for baseball, especially his beloved NY Yankees and loved coaching at Shoshone Park where so many kids played for his teams over the years.
Ray’s biggest joy in life was his family. In addition to his timeless story with Ruth, the Clough Clan includes his five children and their spouses, Lisa (Michael), David (Kristin), Michael (Elizabeth), Edward (Pamela) and Rachel (Martín). All of his children are sure they are his favorite! His 12 grandchildren Nicholas, Erin, Olivia, Michael, Andrew, Patrick, Kennedy, Ryan, Nolan, Liam, Max and Emma brought him so much joy. “Papa” was a soft touch and could always be counted on for a treat by the grandkids and granddogs alike! Nothing made him happier than annual family vacations where he could be found sitting in a chair and smoking a cigar watching over the family.
A celebration of Ray’s wonderful life will be held at a later date. If desired, donations in Ray’s name can be made to FeedMore WNY.
